Vancouver - Whistler - Wells Gray Park - Jasper - Banff - Kelowna - Vancouver

 Your trip begins here:

Day 1: Vancouver to Whistler
(approx 130 km)
Today you pick up your motorhome at Go West and start your journey west on the Trans Canada Highway to West Vancouver, Horseshoe Bay and north on the very scenic Sea to Sky Highway towards Whistler. Among the highlights on this approximately 2 hour trip are Howe Sound, a very beautiful ocean inlet that extends from the ocean deep into the first mountain ranges, and the Coast Mountains with the highest peak in British Columbia, Mt. Waddington, towering at 4016 m or over 12,000 feet.

Day 2: A Day in Whistler

Whistler is a paradise for outdoors activities including hiking, zip trekking, canopy walks, bear watching, mountain biking and helicopter tours.

Day 3: Whistler to Wells Gray Park
(approx 530 km)
Your journey takes you further into the mountains and an isolated wilderness area, before climbing on the Duffy Lake Road. At the lake you’ll gradually drive out of the coastal vegetation into an arid area characterized by deep canyons. It is well worth stopping at Joffrey Lakes a beautiful photo spot before continuing towards Lillooet.
Lillooet was founded as Mile 0 on the wagon road leading to the Cariboo and Barkeville gold fields during the Gold Rush. Serving as a terminus for boat routes across Harrison and Anderson Lakes, at the start of the first Cariboo Road, the town had swelled to almost 15,000 residents within twenty years of its founding. Originally known as Cayoosh Flat because of the good grazing that cayuse (Indian Ponies) found there, the town was renamed in the mid 1860s in honour of the Leelwat First Nations people who live in the region.

After Lilloeet we suggest you drive north on Hwy 99 along the spectacular Fraser Canyon and Pavillion Lake to Cache Creek. The whole area along the Fraser Canyon and the Thompson Valley is dry and arid, and only fertile if irrigated. Look out for the green patches where farmers grow grass and the ginseng plantation that stand out with the black covers.

Day 4: A Day in Wells Gray Park

This is a spectacular, pure wilderness area. Known as a world-class destination for canoeing, rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing, hiking, camping and horseback riding, it is a must stop on any tour of British Columbia. Within Wells Gray Park, experience the stunning vistas of high mountains, deep canyons, volcanic cones, brooding old-growth forests and raging white-water rivers.

Day 5: Wells Gray Park to Jasper
(approx. 400 km)

En route to Jasper, Mount Robson Provincial Park is a jewel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the highest peak in the BC Rockies. Although you can visit the Park on your own, however we suggest you participate in one of the ½ or full day horseback or riverside adventures described in the Handbook.

Day 6: Jasper

Jasper is the largest and most northerly Canadian Rocky Mountain National Park, part of a spectacular World Heritage Site. Comprised of delicate and carefully protected ecosystems, Jasper's scenery is rugged and mountainous. Enjoy the serene beauty of Mount Edith Cavell, explore Maligne Canyon, take a cruise on Maligne Lake, connect with nature along 1,000-plus kilometres of trails or relax in Miette Hotsprings

Day 7: Jasper to David Thompson Highway
(approx. 200 km)
Today you will be, more than ever, treated to unforgettable scenery as you follow the Icefields Parkway, one of the most scenic highways in the world with its glaciers and emerald lakes before heading east onto David Thompson Highway, one of the most scenic routes in the Rockies. En route you could visit Sunwapta Falls and experience Athabasca Glacier up close.
Camp 2 nights at David Thomson Resort.

Day 8: A Day in the David Thompson Highway Area

The Resort offers many activities from horseback riding to hiking, biking, fishing and rafting. A helicopter tour, perhaps combined with a hike or a yoga session high up on the mountains, is a highly recommended and unforgettable experience.

Day 9: David Thompson Highway to Banff
(approx. 120 km)
You go back to Hwy 93 and continue south to Banff, stopping on the way to see world famous Lake Louise. After Lake Louise you have a choice between continuing on Hwy 93 or taking the more tranquil and equally scenic Bow Valley Parkway. You have plenty of time to enjoy some of the many activities offered in Banff.
Camp 2 nights at Tunnel Mountain Campground.

Day 10: A Day in Banff

Possibilities in Banff and its surroundings are endless: take a ride on the scenic gondola or a cruise on Lake Minnewanka, soak in the hot springs, explore Johnston Canyon and the museums of Banff or go on a hike in Sunshine Meadows, known by many as the most stunning alpine setting in the Canadian Rockies

Day 11: Banff to Kelowna
(approx. 480 km)
You make your way through the fertile Okanagan valley, its vineyards and its fruit orchards to the city of Kelowna, beautifully situated on the Okanagan Lake. Kelowna is at the heart of BC’s Okanagan wine region and boasts, in addition to museums, art galleries, unique shops and wonderful restaurants, amazing Wine Festivals featuring, internationally recognized wines.

Day 12: A Day in Kelowna

Cradled within a glorious range of mountains, is a sanctuary filled with pristine lakes, pine forests, abundant gardens, orchards and vineyards, sandy beaches, and superb amenities. Stretching from north to south for approximately 110 km (68 miles) is beautiful Okanagan Lake.  The Okanagan Valley is located at the northern most end of the Sonora Desert and hence has a semi-arid climate, boasting long warm summers and short mild winters.
Relatively undiscovered, Kelowna, is never too crowded despite playing host to visitors the world over.  Kelowna has miles of beautiful parkland, and several sandy beaches which provide wonderful opportunities for boating, swimming, water-skiing, windsurfing, fishing and golfing.

Day 13: Kelowna to Vancouver
(approx. 390 km)
It is time to drive back to Vancouver. You have different options to the coast. You can take the direct route through the dry high plateau and down Coquihalla Hwy, or you can drive south along the beautiful Okanagan Lake to Penticton and then head west through Manning Provincial Park towards Vancouver.
